Country code, exit code, area code: what is what

Three short codes, three different jobs. Mixing them up is the most common reason an international call fails. Put together, a London number called from abroad is +44 20 7946 0018.

Country code

Picks the country you are calling, like 44 for the UK. Always comes right after the + or the exit code.

Exit code

Tells your network the call leaves the country, like 011 from the US or 00 from most of Europe. Only needed on a landline.

Area code

Picks a city or region inside the country, like 20 for London. It is part of the local number.

The +

A shortcut for the exit code on any mobile. Hold the 0 key to type it, and it works from every country.

How to dial an international number in 3 steps

1

Start with + (or the exit code)

On a mobile, type +. On a landline, dial the exit code of the country you are in: 011 in the US, 00 in most other places.

2

Add the country code

The code of the country you are calling: 44 for the UK, 61 for Australia, 234 for Nigeria. Find it in the lookup above.

3

Dial the number without the first 0

Leave out the 0 that local numbers start with: 020 becomes 20. Italy is the one big exception, where the 0 stays.

Worked examples: one number, three ways to dial it

The + version works from anywhere, so it is the one to save. The landline versions swap the + for the exit code of the country you are calling from. Notice how the 0 disappears in every row except Italy.

Why some countries share a code

A few codes cover more than one place. The biggest is +1, which 23 places in our list share, from the United States and Canada to Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic. They all use one numbering plan, and the 3-digit area code after the 1 tells them apart.

Watch the bill, though. A +1 number from Jamaica or the Dominican Republic looks like a domestic US call but is charged as an international one.

+599 Bonaire, Curaรงao, Saba, Sint Eustatius
+34 Canary Islands and Spain
+44 Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey and UK
+39 Italy and Vatican City
+7 Kazakhstan and Russia

Exit codes that are not 00

160 of the 240+ places in our list use 00 to dial out from a landline. These are the exceptions. You only need them on a landline: from a mobile, + replaces every one of them.

011 The United States, Canada and 21 more places that share +1 (NANP)
001 Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Guyana
000 Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda

4 mistakes that make international calls fail

Most failed calls come down to one wrong digit at the start. These are the ones we see most.

Keeping the 0 after the code

+44 020 7946 0018 will not connect. Drop the 0: +44 20 7946 0018. Only Italy keeps it.

Using 00 from the US or Canada

North American landlines dial out with 011, not 00. From a mobile, skip both and type +.

Thinking +1 always means the US

21 other places share +1. A Caribbean +1 number is billed as an international call.

Forgetting other local prefixes

Some countries start local numbers with something other than 0, like 8 in Kazakhstan/Belarus or 06 in Hungary. Drop that too after the code.
